Description/Duties: 

The Valley Park School District is seeking a Full-time Custodian. The Custodian, under general supervision, will perform routine custodial duties and general maintenance tasks for a variety of buildings in order to maintain cleanliness, care, use, and access to facilities. The Custodian is an integral function in preserving the aesthetic presence, safety, and ease of access conducive to an educational environment.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, cafeteria, office, and other locations as assigned in accordance with established procedures and standards. Keep these areas properly supplied with toilet paper, trash bags, paper towels, and other items.
  • Perform high and low dusting. Polish furniture and metal fixtures.
  • Sweep, mop and/or vacuum floors and rugs.
  • Empty trash and recycle containers.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions regarding the use of chemicals, supplies, and equipment. 
  • Strip, neutralize, buff and apply floor finish. Vacuum and extract carpets. Operate hi-speed burnishers and low-speed polishers/scrubbers and bathroom pressure washers. Wash interior and exterior windows.
  • Properly use and care for assigned hand and power equipment needed for the cleaning and preservation of floors, walls, windows, carpets, furniture, etc. 
  • Set-up, take down and move furniture for cleaning and facility maintenance and, as necessary, for events. 
  • Maintain the security of assigned keys and badges. Secure interior doors upon completion of cleaning assignments. Keep building entry doors secured during unoccupied and occupied hours. Observe and report suspicious activity.
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance of custodial equipment.
  • Be accountable for assigned equipment and submit requests for equipment repairs to the supervisor immediately.
  • Maintain inventory of consumables such as chemicals and paper products and submit consumables order needs to the supervisor in a timely manner to avoid running out of stock.
  • Remove snow and ice from building entrances and from walkways between buildings as well as between buildings and parking lots as needed.
  • Assisting in the set-up and breakdown of special events equipment and cleanup afterward throughout the district as directed.
  • Monitoring all assigned areas for conditions that require immediate attention i.e. plumbing problems, loss of heat or air conditioning, or any emergency situation.
  • Respond immediately to emergency situations, and notify the maintenance supervisor as soon as possible.
  • Completing minor maintenance or grounds keeping tasks in any district building as directed.
  • Respond to and perform emergency functions, as required. Perform other related custodial and minor maintenance and repair work, as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Other duties assigned by supervisor.

Job Requirements:

  • Requires prolonged standing and considerable walking on level surfaces as well as climbing up and downstairs and ladders (as needed). 
  • Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull or push heavy objects or materials (50 pounds).
  • Requires stooping, bending and reaching.
  • Must work in noisy, stressful and crowded environments.
  • Must work in and around chemical odors.
  • Must follow district guidelines regarding dress code.
  • Must work with cleaning chemicals, solvents and disinfectants.
  • Requires the full range of motion with neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, back, torso, knees and ankles.
  • Must work indoors and outdoors year-round.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is a requirement of this position.

Hours: Monday-Friday 9:00 am- 5:30 pm.

 

As a condition of employment, all new hires will be required to complete a FBI, State Highway Patrol and Children’s Division of the Department of Social Services background check.

 

Qualifications:

  • Custodial experience strongly preferred. School Custodian experience preferred.
  • Stable work history.
  • Demonstrate aptitude/competency for assigned responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates initiative, cooperation and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to meet the requirements of the district’s custodian job description.
